The NIT bracket has officially been released. I’ll have a lot more thoughts about what this all means once we see what the College Basketball Crown bracket looks like. Right now though if you’re a FOX executive you have to be pretty happy.

Now I’m really confused. How’d a Kent State team with three fewer wins than Miami, three head-to-head losses to Miami (including in the MAC semis), and finished three games back of Miami in conference play get a bid ahead of Miami? By what metric is Kent a better team?
ReplyDeleteI see Miami OH's athletic director was fired up about the decision as well. I don't know what happened, but Kent St.'s KNIT (average of the seven team sheet metrics) was 3 spots better on average because the "predictive" metrics liked Kent St. better than Miami OH. Still, it's a weird look for sure given the head-to-head results and how close it was. I do wonder if that slim difference was the decision-maker.
ReplyDeleteI’m sure that was it, but it’s a textbook example of ignoring what is right in front of your face just to keep the system you set up. KSU benefitted from the fact that Auburn and Alabama are really good. Doesn’t matter that they got blown out by both. If head-to-head results don’t matter (and I reiterate, Miami beat the Flashes thrice), why even play the games? This and the South Alabama debacle are going to be a major black eye on the NIT, and hopefully bring changes in the future.
